Well Being Africa (WBA) helps workplaces in low resources-communities to access the support that their employees need to protect and promote their mental health and psychosocial wellbeing. Continued psychosocial support is necessary to help employees to manage stress, trauma, grief, and other life challenges. This support is often lacking or limited in workplaces especially for the low cadre employees. The resultant effect is the social ills expressed in society.
The coronavirus pandemic left many people with emotional pain and traumatised owing to loss of family members or colleagues or loss of jobs and means of regular income.
The community care workers (CCWs) that WBA serves are not spared of their share of the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. People adopt various coping mechanisms to deal with the stress caused by the pandemic. Our psychosocial counselling intervention for CCWs is helping in alleviating their distress and enhancing their coping skills.
Our approach of support
WBA uses the following counselling strategies for psychosocial counselling intervention.
Individual psychosocial counselling: CCWs or employees who indicate their need for individual counselling are scheduled for one-on-one counselling with one of our experienced psychologists. The coordinators of the different groups of CCWs also identify and refer their members who need individual psychological counselling from time to time.
Group psychosocial counselling: The negative impact of COVID-19 has affected all employees in various ways. Therefore, the group psychosocial counselling approach is being used to provide a session of psychosocial counselling intervention for the groups of CCWs or workers as needed.
Phone-based or virtual engagement: When situations prevent a face-to-face interaction with the psychologist, we employ the virtual platform including telephone conversation, video chat, WhatsApp call, etc.
Psychological Self-Care: This is a psychosocial programme that we do to help employees especially care workers take care of their mental, emotional and physical health. Good self-care is key to improving the mood and reducing anxiety all of which impact productivity. A person who cares for others must be in control of his/her self-care.
